New Health Economist Position

HVRF and HMRI agreement will see a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two organisations.

The agreement between the Hunter Valley Research Foundation (HVRF) and Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) will create a new role, HMRI Health Research Economist, which will add valuable expertise to both organisations and the Hunter Region. HMRI Director, Professor Maree Gleeson, and HVRF CEO, Dr Wej Paradice AM, have confirmed arrangements for the HMRI Health Research Economist, who will be employed by HMRI and be accommodated at the HVRF research centre at Maryville.

Dr Paradice said the MoU with HMRI to create the Health Research Economist role marks a new level of cooperation between the two Hunter research organisations. “This collaboration grew out of recognition by both HVRF and HMRI of an increasing need to apply economics to health care decision making, not only in the Hunter Region but more broadly,” he said. “The HVRF Board supports this initiative as an important partnership for the Foundation, providing a practical and worthwhile way for the two organisations to work together to develop capacity in the Region in the emerging field of health research economics.”

The HMRI Health Research Economist will document methods and techniques for undertaking economic evaluations of health interventions arising from health research, and apply this expertise to evaluating the economic outcomes of HMRI affiliated research projects. The HVRF will provide the economist with mentoring, peer support by economists and statisticians, and shared research expertise.
