Household Travel Survey – NSW Transport - Since 1997

NEW: Survey celebrates 16 years | Read more

The Household Travel Survey (HTS) is a large-scale project conducted on behalf of the NSW Bureau of Transport Statistics.  Data is collected from over 5,000 randomly-selected households per year. The survey is conducted across the Greater Metropolitan Area (Illawarra, Sydney and the Lower Hunter), and is the only source of information on the day-to-day travel of people living in the area. The project methodology is face-to-face interviewing, and the HVRF employs a team of around 30 professional interviewers working exclusively on this project. The project management requirements include: testing, design and development of survey resources and procedures; sourcing, recruiting, training and monitoring suitable staff; sample management; data management and presentation; monthly report preparation; regular client liaison. Comprehensive quality control systems are in place and the project management team are committed to a policy of continuous improvement, a philosophy demonstrated proactively on this project since 1997.

Recently completed projects

Central Coast quality of life study
Gosford City and Wyong Shire Councils, 2008. A survey aimed at deepening Council's understanding of residents and community. The study mirrored many aspects of the HVRF’s wellbeing research and will be utilised to inform policy decisions in years to come. The collection of quality of life data is particularly useful as local government moves to long-term strategic planning, with councils being required to compile 25-year plans with a vision for the future of their residents.

Program evaluation of service for Aboriginal clientele
NSW Department of Ageing Disability and Home Care (DADHC)]. Conducted a broad-ranging evaluation of a new State-wide program for access to some of the agency’s services for Aboriginal clients. The project included workshops and in-depth interviews with key stakeholders, a phone survey of Aboriginal clients, and analysis of administrative data. The phone survey achieved an exceptionally high response rate and the final report will provide information and recommendations for decision-making about future development of the program for the benefit of the Aboriginal community. The project formed the basis of a presentation to the international conference of the Australasian Evaluation Society in Canberra in September 2009.
